What Are Dental Veneers and What Can They Do For Me?
Porcelain Veneers, or dental veneers as they are sometimes called, are a much less involved alternative to repairing the appearance of your smile than dental
crowns. This is because, instead of completely surrounding a tooth, as a crown would, a veneer just covers the front part of the tooth. Not only is this much less expensive, but it does not require the removal of a lot of tooth material that would be necessary to place a crown.
So what are these veneers? They are thin, but strong, shells of ceramic material that are bonded to the front of teeth. They can quickly make amazing differences in the appearance of teeth and are often used to correct teeth that are mismatched or chipped, or to remove unsightly gaps.
The veneers are most commonly created from resin composite or porcelain. Veneers made with porcelain are more resistant to spotting or staining that resin veneers and look much more like natural teeth. Veneers made with resin are thinner than porcelain and don’t require the removal of as much tooth enamel prior to being cemented to the tooth.
Compared to dental crowns, the veneers are quite strong and resilient to wear once they are bonded to teeth. They are so durable, in fact, that you can expect them to last from ten to fifteen years, if you practice good at home dental care.
